Bausch & Lomb Super Baltar lenses are a series of vintage cinema lenses from the 1960s, highly sought after for their unique, cinematic look. Originally designed for Mitchell camera systems, they’ve since been rehoused by companies like True Lens Services (TLS) and P+S Technik to be compatible with modern digital cinema cameras.
Key Features and Benefits
Distinct Vintage Look 🎬: They deliver a warm tone, medium to low contrast, and soft focus roll-off, creating a gentle and artistic aesthetic. This helps “take the edge off” the sharp, clean look of modern digital sensors.
Unique Lens Flares and Bokeh: They feature trademark blue, purple, and amber coatings that produce stunning and unique flares. When used wide open, they create a beautiful, consistent, and textured bokeh.
Historical Legacy 🎞️: These lenses are famously known as the “Godfather lenses,” having been used to shoot iconic films like The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. They were also used more recently on films like Rush and The Witch.
Modern Compatibility: Thanks to rehousing, they now have a smooth, reliable cam-drive focus system, PL mounts, and consistent 110mm fronts, making them easy to use with modern camera accessories and a favorite for cinematographers.
Impressive Sensor Coverage: Certain focal lengths can cover Super 35+ and even Full Frame sensors, which is exceptional for vintage lenses of their era.
