Tunable Optics: Not just vintage-inspired, Blackwing lenses are tuned to deliver specific looks. Parameters like sharpness, contrast, spherical aberration, field curvature, edge halation, and flare can be modified.
Three Standard Tunings:
S-Tuned (“Straight”): Offers a more traditional look reminiscent of mid-20th-century lenses, with smoother contrast roll-off and controlled flaring. Uses multi-layer coatings.
T-Tuned (“Transient”): A workhorse option with noticeable contrast roll-off, heightened edge halation, and more vibrant, vintage-style single-coated flares. Designed for a slightly softer, artistic image.
X-Tuned (“Expressive”): The lowest contrast variant, creating dreamy, ethereal images with exaggerated halation, subtle spherical aberration, and focal plane curvature for a shallower depth of field. Features selectively uncoated edges to reduce contrast.
Large Format Coverage: Designed to cover large format sensors, including Full Frame, VistaVision, and even 65mm cameras like the ARRI ALEXA 65.
Fast Aperture: A consistent T1.9 (or T1.8 for some longer focal lengths) across most of the set, providing excellent low-light performance and shallow depth of field.
Smooth Bokeh: Equipped with a 14-blade iris, producing remarkably smooth and pleasing out-of-focus areas.
Vintage Inspiration, Modern Design: While drawing inspiration from 1930s-1960s optics, these are newly designed lenses, not rehoused vintage glass, ensuring modern reliability and consistency.
