The Cineovision Anamorphic lens sets are legendary vintage Japanese optics from the 1970s and 80s. While Cineovision was the “manufacturer,” their secret sauce was the use of high-end Zeiss and Canon glass as the spherical base, which was then paired with anamorphic front elements to create a unique cinematic look.
Cineovision lenses are prized for bridging the gap between clinical sharpness and vintage “soul.” They often utilize Zeiss High Speed (Super Speed) or Canon K-35 glass as their internal “donor” optics. Because they were custom-built, no two sets are identical, leading to a “hand-crafted” reputation among cinematographers.
Key Features:
Unique Optical Character: Combines the high-performance contrast of Zeiss or the warmth of Canon with classic anamorphic artifacts.
Horizontal Lens Flare: Known for the iconic “blue streak” or “starburst” flares that are highly sought after for a sci-fi or high-drama aesthetic.
Oval Bokeh: Creates beautiful, vertically elongated out-of-focus highlights that are a hallmark of true anamorphic shooting.
Fast Apertures: Often featuring T1.4 to T1.6 base glass, they are significantly faster than many other vintage anamorphic options, making them excellent for low-light.
Painterly Fall-off: The center of the frame remains sharp while the edges feature a gentle, romantic softness (vignetting and distortion).
Robust Rehousing: Modern versions (rehoused by companies like Zero Optik or GL Optics) offer improved focus mechanics and standardized front diameters for professional film sets.
Cost: 65.000 Euro
