A complete Cinefade system is a specialized piece of filmmaking equipment that allows a cinematographer to adjust the depth of field during a shot while maintaining a constant exposure. This is a unique creative effect that can be used to shift the audience’s focus within a single, continuous shot.
The system works by using two key motorized components that are slaved to each other: a motorized iris on the lens and a motorized variable neutral density (ND) filter inside the camera’s matte box.
How It Works ⚙️The core of the Cinefade system is a balancing act between the lens’s iris and the variable ND filter.
The iris motor adjusts the aperture of the lens. Changing the aperture directly controls the depth of field—a smaller aperture (higher T-stop) increases the depth of field (more of the scene is in focus), while a larger aperture (lower T-stop) decreases it (more of the scene is out of focus).
As the iris motor changes the aperture, it also changes the amount of light hitting the sensor, which would normally affect the exposure.
To counteract this, the motorized variable ND filter is slaved to the iris motor. As the iris opens, the ND filter simultaneously becomes more dense to block more light, and as the iris closes, the ND filter becomes less dense to let more light through. This synchronization ensures that the overall exposure of the shot remains constant, even as the depth of field changes.
The system is typically controlled remotely by a focus puller or camera operator using a hand unit that has a slider or knob to control the depth of field transition. A full Cinefade kit can also be used as a simple variable ND filter or a motorized circular polarizer (RotaPola) for other effects.
