The Zeiss Standard Speed Mark II lenses are a set of vintage prime lenses primarily designed for Super 35mm film and digital cinematography. Developed by Carl Zeiss for ARRI, the Mark II version was introduced in the mid-1980s, succeeding the original Standard Primes. They became industry workhorses, prized for their compact size, robust construction, and distinct vintage film aesthetic. They are commonly used to complement the faster Zeiss Super Speed lenses, as they share the same T* multi-coating and overall look, offering a broader range of focal lengths.
Key Features:
Vintage Aesthetic: Delivers a desirable classic, filmic look with organic sharpness, fall-off, and distinctive bokeh (out-of-focus areas), adding character to modern digital footage.
Consistent Aperture: Most focal lengths have a constant maximum aperture of T2.1, providing good low-light performance (hence “Standard Speed” vs. the faster “Super Speed” T1.3/T1.4).
Compact & Lightweight: Smaller and lighter than many modern cinema lenses, making them ideal for handheld, Steadicam, or gimbal work where mobility is crucial.
Integrated Gearing: The Mark IIs were improved with integrated focus and iris gears for use with follow focus systems, standardizing them for professional cine use.
ARRI/Zeiss T* Coating: Features the same high-quality T* multi-coating as the Super Speeds, improving light transmission and flare control, and ensuring a visual match between the two lens sets.
Industry Workhorse: Known for their solid build and reliability, they have been used on many notable feature films and remain relevant as a rental item today.
PL Mount: Built to accept the ARRI PL (Positive Lock) mount, the cinema standard for professional camera systems.
