The Canon K35 lenses are a highly sought-after set of vintage, high-speed cinema prime lenses manufactured by Canon in the 1970s and 80s. They are famous for their unique, distinct filmic look, and are typically rehoused by companies like TLS or P+S Technik for compatibility with modern cinema cameras (PL Mount).
Key Features:
High-Speed Apertures: T1.3 – T1.5 range allows for excellent low-light performance and beautiful, shallow depth of field.
Unique Vintage Look: Characterized by low contrast, warm color rendition, pastel skin tones, and gentle focus fall-off for a “painterly” or “dreamy” aesthetic.
Pleasing Bokeh: Often feature a 15-blade circular iris which produces soft, circular, and sometimes “swirly” out-of-focus highlights.
Aspherical Elements: An innovative design at the time (winning an Academy Award in 1977) that allows for good sharpness on center even wide open, while maintaining the vintage character.
Modern Rehousing: Lenses are housed in rugged, modern cinema bodies (typically PL Mount) with extended focus scales (300° rotation) and consistent 110mm front diameters for professional, reliable use.
Large Format Coverage: Many focal lengths (e.g., 24mm, 35mm, 55mm, 85mm) cover Full-Frame or S35+ sensors, making them versatile for modern digital cameras.
