Note about the 50mm lens:
The witness scale has fallen out of calibration with the optic in a manner that is not fixed by traditional collimation. It’s a little (-) in the close focus range and a little (+) in the far focus. So at close focus the witness marks indicate that you’re a little under where you should be, and close to infinity, it’s over ( meaning you can get a proper infinity no problem, which is important). The mid-range is on. It’s quite minor, but for the sake of full disclosure, it bears mentioning. It would need either a re- tooling of the focus mechanism, or the cheaper and more practical solution would probably be to re-do the markings on the barrel, since close focus and infinity are not really compromised.
The Kowa Anamorphic Set of 4 is an exceptional and comprehensive collection of vintage Japanese anamorphic cinema primes, renowned for their extraordinarily beautiful optical character that delivers a uniquely refined take on the classic anamorphic look — featuring strikingly elegant blue horizontal flares, smooth oval bokeh, and a warm, three-dimensional rendering that has made Kowa anamorphics one of the most distinctive and sought-after vintage anamorphic lens series in professional filmmaking. This four-lens set, spanning 40mm through 100mm, provides cinematographers with a complete and versatile anamorphic prime range covering wide-angle through short telephoto perspectives, with the addition of the 100mm extending the set into portraiture and dialogue territory for a truly comprehensive production system. Originally manufactured in Japan for professional cinema production and now professionally serviced and rehoused for modern PL mount compatibility, these lenses are an outstanding choice for feature films, music videos, and commercial productions seeking a distinctive, characterful anamorphic identity with a uniquely elegant Japanese optical sensibility.
Key Features:
Each lens in the set produces Kowa’s signature brilliant blue horizontal lens flares, widely regarded as among the most visually striking and elegant flare characteristics of any vintage anamorphic lens series available today.
The distinctive oval bokeh and smooth, organic focus fall-off deliver a beautifully cinematic out-of-focus rendering that adds a uniquely expressive and three-dimensional quality to every frame.
The four focal lengths — 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm — provide a complete and versatile anamorphic prime range covering wide-angle through short telephoto perspectives, with the 100mm adding valuable portraiture and dialogue capabilities to the set.
The anamorphic 2x squeeze factor delivers the classic 2.39:1 widescreen aspect ratio natively in-camera, providing the authentic scope look without the need for post-production desqueezing artifacts or cropping.
Kowa anamorphic lenses deliver a warm, refined color rendition and gentle contrast rendering with a distinctly Japanese optical sensibility that sets them apart from Soviet and Western anamorphic alternatives.
PL mount compatibility ensures seamless integration with a wide range of professional cinema cameras, including ARRI, RED, and Sony VENICE platforms, making them fully operational within modern professional production ecosystems.
Each lens in the set has been professionally serviced and rehoused to meet the operational demands of contemporary professional production, providing the reliability and tactile precision expected on high-end sets.
